Good manners on a Pueblo visit

The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center asks visitors to call a Pueblo directly at least two days before a visit to make sure the community will be open to visitors. Although most Pueblos are open to the public during daylight hours, the homes are private. Tribal dances are religious ceremonies, not public performances.

At most Pueblos, photographing, sketching or painting on location needs a permit, and some Pueblos do not allow photography at any time. Once a photo permit is obtained, always ask permission before taking a photograph of a tribal member. Silence is mandatory during all Pueblo dances and ceremonies: no questions, no interviews with participants, no walking across the dance plaza, and no applause.

Kivas, ceremonial rooms and cemeteries are restricted to Pueblo members only. On feast days, enter a home only by invitation, and it is courteous to accept an invitation to eat but not to linger, and a payment or tip is not appropriate. Do not remove artifacts, pottery sherds or other items from a Pueblo. Start and finish times for Pueblo ceremonies are set by nature and by the sequence of events, not the clock.
