The LIVIN.in founders had been deep in the final details of a digital magazine — the kind of work that pulls you into screens and away from the real world the magazine is supposed to celebrate. So we closed the laptops, walked out onto the patio under the shade sails, and ordered food.
The plates came out the way they should: serious, well-built, no shortcuts. One of us went with the shaved ribeye sandwich on a focaccia bun — arugula, melted cheese — paired with a pint of Farmers Light. Another ordered a brioche bun sandwich with sweet potato fries and onion rings on the side. The third had her eyes on the ribs before the plate even landed.
Somewhere between bites, someone asked out loud: So what exactly is LIVIN.in?
Rick answered without hesitating. "It's a digital magazine with a hyper local focus on the community lifestyle."
Simple. Honest. Done.
That answer points at something real. LIVIN.in exists to tell the stories of local people — the ones who show up every day and pour themselves into making their communities worth living in. The bakery owner who's been here for decades. The framing shop that's been on the same block for 46 years. The person who wakes up before sunrise on a Saturday just to make sure you get a good loaf of bread.
I've seen what happens when those stories go untold. People don't know what they've got until it's gone. That's the whole reason this thing needed to exist.
Farmers Brewing Co. was the right room for this moment. The barn out back with the corrugated metal roof and the "Man I Love Farmers" sign on the side doesn't take itself too seriously, and neither do we. It's built around something specific — California agriculture, craft beer, food that doesn't try to be something it's not. That alignment wasn't an accident.
We've told a lot of stories already — the Upper Crust Bakery, Chico Paper Company, the Saturday morning farmers market that makes the whole weekend feel different. Every one of them started with a person who decided to care deeply about one thing and do it right here in Chico.
