Pasha: You'll Come for the Rugs. You'll Stay for the Stories.

Hasan & Jale Safak have built something rare at 212 Main St β€” a shop where every rug carries a story, a technique, and in some cases, a century of history.

Some of the rugs at 212 Main St are over 100 years old. Hasan says he can look at a rug and tell you exactly how old it is just by reading its colors β€” the palette, the way certain shades have faded, what the pigments say about when and where it was made. He learned it, he says, starting at 13, working side by side with his father in eastern Turkey.

That is the reason Pasha Hand Crafted Rugs exists in Downtown Chico. And it is the reason the shop is worth your time.

A Craft Carried Across Continents

While Jale grew up in Istanbul, Hasan grew up in eastern Turkey, learning the rug trade from his father as a teenager. Together, they have run their Main Street shop for the better part of a decade. The knowledge they brought with them to this block is hard to find anywhere else in the North State.

Rugs hang from floor to ceiling and are stacked in thick layers across wide platforms. Every direction you look, there is color, pattern, and craftsmanship that took years β€” sometimes generations β€” to produce.

The welcome you get from Hasan and Jale the moment you walk in feels genuine. They want to share their passion with you and teach you about what you are looking at. That generosity comes through in every conversation.

What It Actually Takes to Make One

Every rug at Pasha is made by hand using traditional weaving methods β€” no machines, no shortcuts. All of the wool is colored using organic dyes. No chemicals. Hasan will tell you some of the bigger, more detailed pieces take up to two years to finish. That is not a marketing line. That is just what the work requires.

As a local, I walked in thinking I would spend ten minutes and ended up staying for close to an hour. Hasan has a way of explaining the process that changes how you see everything in the room. Once you know what went into making something, you cannot look at it the same way again.

More Than a Store

Pasha also cleans and repairs rugs, with free pick-up and delivery within Chico. If you have a rug that has been in your family for years and needs some care, Hasan's background means he will treat it the same way he treats the century-old pieces on his own walls. Give them a call at (530) 774-2302.
