Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre historic urban cultural park in San Diego, California. Placed in reserve in 1835, the park's site is one of the oldest in the United States dedicated to public recreational use. The park hosts various museums, theaters, restaurants and the San Diego Zoo. Balboa Park grounds are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and there are no gates or admission fees to enter the park itself. Individual museums, gardens and performing arts venues have their own hours, which vary by day.
The main address for Balboa Park is 1549 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101. Tours of the Balboa Park Cultural District start at the Balboa Park Visitors Center and include scheduled tours led by volunteers.
On parking, the first 3 hours are free in the Lower Inspiration Point parking lot, and all other lots require payment.
The main entrance to the park is via the Cabrillo Bridge and through the California Quadrangle. The California Building, with its ornate facade and blue-and-gold dome, and the adjoining California Tower are among the most recognizable landmarks in San Diego.

The California Tower is 198 feet tall and is open for public tours as of January 1, 2015. The tower is composed of three tiers that shift from a quadrangle to an octagon and then a circle. The carillon in the tower can be heard throughout the park. It plays the Westminster Chimes every quarter-hour, and a resident carillonneur plays three songs at noon every day.
El Prado, a long, wide promenade and boulevard, runs through the park's center. Most of the buildings lining this street are in the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture style. Other features along El Prado include the Reflection Pond, the latticed Botanical Building and the Bea Evenson Fountain.
The Botanical Building, designed by Carleton Winslow, was the largest wood lath structure in the world when it was built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition, and it remains one of the largest lath structures in the world. It contains large specimen palms and other plants and sits next to a long reflecting pool on the El Prado side. The building was closed in 2021 for renovations and reopened in December 2024.
A garden and Lily Pond were built in front of the building in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition. The Botanical Building and Lily Pond and the Timken Museum of Art are always free.

Balboa Park is home to 17 museums and cultural institutions, ranging from art and natural history to science, aviation and anthropology. The Balboa Park Explorer Pass is a multi-museum pass that provides admission to up to 16 of Balboa Park's museums and cultural institutions. It is available as a one-day Limited Pass (4 museums), a seven-day Parkwide Pass (16 museums), or an Annual Pass (365 days). The pass does not include the San Diego Zoo, Comic-Con Museum or performing arts venues.
With more than 5,000 pipes, the Spreckels Organ is the world's largest pipe organ in a fully outdoor venue. The Spreckels Organ Pavilion was constructed for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, and it sits at the corner of President's Way and Pan American Road East in the park. Free organ concerts are given in Balboa Park at 2:00 pm each Sunday afternoon. During the summer months, check the Twilight in the Park summer concert series schedule at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion.
The Old Globe Theatre complex includes a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre as well as an outdoor stage and a theatre in the round. The Casa Del Prado Theater is the home of San Diego Junior Theatre, the country's oldest children's theatre program.
On weekends, there are free Saturday and Sunday Lawn Programs at the House of Pacific Relations and International Cottages. The International Cottages on El Prado offer free entertainment shows.
The Spanish Village Art Center is an art center in Balboa Park. It was originally designed and constructed by architect Richard Requa for the second year of the California Pacific International Exposition in 1935. The artists moved back into their spaces in 1947.

The park's gardens include Alcazar Garden, the Botanical Building, the Desert Cactus Garden, the Japanese Friendship Garden, Palm Canyon and Zoro Garden. Many of the original trees were planted by the American landscape architect, botanist, plantswoman and gardener Kate Sessions. A cherry blossom festival is celebrated annually in March in the Japanese Friendship Garden.
The Balboa Park Carousel was built in 1910 and has been located in Balboa Park since 1922. It was moved to its current spot near the Zoo entrance in 1968. It retains most of its original equipment, including 52 hand-carved wooden animals and four chariots.
December Nights, originally called Christmas on the Prado, takes place in Balboa Park on the first full weekend in December each year.
A few rules: smoking is not permitted in Balboa Park. Balboa Park is pet friendly. There are also several dog parks located within Balboa Park.
