I Walked Past The Bookstore and Lost an Hour of My Day

I was mid-errand downtown when the window display pulled me off course. Over 70,000 titles, creaky hardwood floors, and staff who actually know books β€” The Bookstore will cost you at least an hour.

The window display got me. I was walking through downtown on an errand, not looking for a stop, and forty-five minutes later I was still inside with a stack I hadn't planned on buying. As a local, that's just how it goes with this place.

Interior of The Bookstore showing long aisles of shelved used books organized by genre including Fiction, Sci-Fi, Comics, and New Age, with exposed brick walls
Over 70,000 titles across every section you can think of

They carry over 70,000 titles β€” Fiction, Sci-Fi, Architecture, Comics, New Age, and a lot more. That number doesn't feel real until you're standing in it. The floors creak under your feet and the whole place smells like old books. You slow down without even thinking about it.

Pull up a stool and stay a while

They keep worn wooden stools in the aisles so you can sit and flip through something before you decide. Nobody rushes you. The staff are friendly and if they don't have what you're looking for, they'll order it for you. Real talk β€” that kind of service is rare.

Dense shelving in a back room of The Bookstore packed with paperback fiction and genre titles, with a Ouija board visible on top of a shelf
The deeper you go, the better it gets

The back sections are their own world β€” mystery, thriller, genre books stacked floor to ceiling. A Ouija board was sitting on top of one of the shelves when I was in. Felt about right.

They're open seven days a week. Give them a call at (530) 345-7441 if you want to check on something before you come in.
