The Santa Fe Depot and the Rail Runner

Santa Fe Depot is the northern terminus of the New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter rail line. Wikipedia says the station was originally built by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Wikipedia says Rail Runner service to the station began on December 17, 2008.

The historic depot building is operated by the City of Santa Fe. You can pick up schedules and tourist information there.

Sky Railway's 1924 Pullman cars

Most Sky Railway trains depart from and return to the Santa Fe Depot. All Sky Railway trains are round trip, and you stay on the train for the entire ride.

The passenger cars are classic 1924 Pullman cars with windows that open. The engine is a 1952 GM EMD GP7. Sky Railway has four passenger cars: the Acoma, the Celeste, the Nova and the Orion. In Sky Railway's FAQ, the first class car, The Acoma, is the only car you can specifically reserve with Acoma tickets.

The 1913 warehouse by Isaac Hamilton Rapp

The Gross, Kelly and Company Warehouse was constructed in 1913 and is located in the Santa Fe Railyard at 501 South Guadalupe St., per the City of Santa Fe historic properties list.

The Historic Santa Fe Foundation calls it the earliest example of a commercial building designed in the Spanish Pueblo Revival Style by a primary creator of the style, Isaac Hamilton Rapp. The foundation says Rapp proceeded to design several other important early Santa Fe Style buildings, including Sunmount Sanatorium (1914) and the New Mexico Building at the Panama-California Exposition in San Diego (1915).

Gross, Kelly and Company originated in Kansas in 1869 and established warehouses at key distribution points along the railroad lines, reaching New Mexico by 1880.

Tomasita's in the Chile Line station

Tomasita's Santa Fe is in the red brick building that was once home to the Chile Line. As Tomasita's tells it, the Denver and Rio Grande was fondly referred to as the Chile Line, and its seven hour run from Antonito to Santa Fe went through mountain, mesa, and river valley.

The red brick station house, constructed in 1904, still stands, and it now houses Tomasita's.

In 1979 Tomasita's moved to the red brick building in Santa Fe's Railyard, where it still is today. Tomasita's is now in its third generation of family ownership.

Tomasita's home page calls it family-owned and operated, and it names its famous red and green chiles and its signature Swirl margaritas. Tomasita's Santa Fe is at 500 South Guadalupe St., phone 505-983-5721. Tomasita's home page lists Santa Fe hours of Sunday to Thursday, 11am to 9pm, and Friday and Saturday, 11am to 10pm.

SITE SANTA FE is at 1606 Paseo de Peralta, phone 505-989-1199.

The Catch: Parking

Rio Metro asks riders not to park in the Tomasita's parking lot, and says cars will be towed. Parking is available for a fee in the parking structure off Manhattan Avenue.

Getting there

Sky Railway's driving directions say Manhattan Avenue will lead you to the underground parking structure. Sky Railway's FAQ says there are 400 spaces in the 3-level underground parking structure near REI and 500 surface spaces spread across The Railyard. Sky Railway's FAQ lists garage rates of $1 for the first hour, $2 per hour thereafter and a $12 maximum same day.

The historic Santa Fe Depot building has schedules and tourist information.

The Santa Fe Railyard calendar lists the Railyard Arts District Last Friday Art Walk at The Railyard on October 30, 2026.
